There are many places where you can walk or run inn town. Walking in the surroundings of the village you will observe agriculture areas, stretches of forest, birds in the morning or just people working out. Some of the recommended routes are 468 to Agua Azul, 508 to La Guaria and 301 to Rio Fortuna. You can also take a walk in one of the many ecological parks, such as the National Park, the Arenal Observatory, the Mystic Puentes Colgantes, El Silencio Trails, Rio Fortuna Waterfall, Cerro Chato, among others. It should be noted that most of these ecological parks charge an entry fee that varies in price depending on the place.
El Salto is a clear river attraction in La Fortuna. It is located 1 mile south from La Fortuna town on road 702 towards San Ramón. It is found just after the main entrance to the waterfall. This is a free and public place where you can take advantage to swim and enjoy the beauty of the Fortuna River. It has a fairly deep pool, small waterfalls in the surroundings and a lush rainforest. This site can be easily reached by car, although most people usually arrive walking or by bicycle.
One of the most popular activities to do on your own in the area is to visit a Hot Springs site. Frequently, the best time for this is in the late afternoon and evening due to the temperature of these waters. There are different resorts, from free sites like "El Choyín" in the Tabacon River, to luxurious and expensive places to enjoy. There options for everyone; therefore, there is a very large variety of places accessible at medium price to relax in their waters.
Only 17 kilometers West from La Fortuna downtown is located the Lake Arenal which is one of the biggest attractions in the area. In this lake, it is possible to swim, to fish, to go on a boat tour, to do kayaking, or just admire the beauties of the place in its surroundings.
Other way for visiting the surroundings of La Fortuna is to rent a bicycle. In downtown it is possible to find several tourist avenues where bike rentals are. You can rent the bicycle for half day or for the whole day; then, you are able to do different types of rides, from some very easy in the surroundings of the town, to others that requires a little more experience and skills.
