The rainforest of La Fortuna enclose itself extraordinary ecosystems. It is possible to observe an attractive and high variety of natural resources among plants and animals.

Biodiversity

Most of the area of La Fortuna town presents a Rainy Tropical Forest in its surroundings; its main characteristic is being highly diverse. A good example about it is that Costa Rica owns over 12000 species of plants and approximately 70 percent of them are possible to observe in the Rainforest.

Hiking early in the morning is synonymous of finding a great activity from living creatures including several tropical bird species. Some of the most popular sites where you can enjoy Flora and Fauna in La Fortuna are: Arenal Volcano National Park, 1968 Arenal Park, El Silencio Observatory and Trails, Mistico Park, Sky Adventure Park, All around the Arenal Lake, La Fortuna Waterfall, Cerro Chato, Observatory Arenal Park, Ecogarden Arenal, Ecocentro Danaus, Peñas Blancas River, and more.

Many species of trees can be found in La Fortuna, such as Ceiba, Pylon, Cedar, Fig, Corteza Amarilla or Tabebuia Ochracea, Targuá, Guarumo, Balsa, Burío, Yos, among many others. Some of the most common species of tropical plants that can be observed are: Heliconias, Ferns, Pacayas, Ginger, Anturios, Dieffenbachia, Begonias, Bijaguas, etc.

Regarding wildlife and if you are looking for monkeys for example, some of the good places to find them are: All around Arenal Lake, Arenal hanging bridges of Mistico Park and by the Trails of El Silencio Park; however there is more Probability of observing wildlife along Peñas Blancas river.

For observing a Toucan, it is advisable to visit the surroundings of Arenal Lake, the Arenal Volcano National Park or El Silencio, and even in the surroundings of the town. These birds are usually watched in open areas or in the upper part of the trees. Sloths are possible to be observed near the main road to Arenal Lake. They use be in trees called Guarumos. Peñas Blancas River and a small town called Chachagua, located 15 minutes away from La Fortuna are the best places to find one of these particular animals. Nearby Tabacón River and on the way to Arenal Lake, it is common to be surprised by the visit of groups of White Nose Coati, who catch the total attention of travelers.

The Ecocentro Danaus is one of the most recommended places to visit if you want to get a short walk focused of bird watching, Sloths, and many other species of flora and fauna. This is a refuge dedicated to conservation and environmental education.

If you are looking for nocturnal animals such as frogs, snakes, insects or others, it is recommendable the new and excellent Ecogarden Arenal. It is located 10 minutes away from La Fortuna downtown.
